Demeter

The Demeter certificate guarantees that the extra virgin olive oil has been produced under the principles of biodynamic agriculture, an approach that goes one step beyond organic.

Demeter is the strictest international certification for biodynamic production. In order to obtain the Demeter certificate, the extra virgin olive oil, in addition to being organic, must meet a number of very specific additional requirements.

For example, the planting of the olive trees must be spaced closer together to ensure adequate levels of solar radiation. In addition, aromatic herbs will have to be planted in the alleys between the rows, with the aim of improving nutrient fixation in the soil and attracting the presence of auxiliary fauna.

It will also be necessary to coexist with livestock species within the agricultural exploitation of the crop, in order to have an autonomous capacity for the production of compost and to guarantee the maintenance of its vegetation cover. In this way, soil fertilisation will be carried out using manure from these livestock species, together with the alpeorujo generated in the production of olive oil and the specific biodynamic preparations marked by this certification.
